First Christian Helps Empower Families to Reach Greater Independence
Sometimes you just need a champion in your corner!
Shiny Varghese, the Family Advocate at Eastern Area Community Ministries (EACM) is that champion for families in Northeast Jefferson County. Through her work with the Family Empowerment Program, she is helping families move toward greater financial independency.
Many families don’t realize that they already have the assets and ability to make positive changes in their lives that can lead to greater stability. Shiny takes the time to show these adults that it is possible and links these families to important resources to help.
One of the greatest impacts for FEP families has been intensive budgeting counseling and financial education. When money gets tight, we often panic and sometimes make choices that ultimate hurt us rather than help.
Shiny helps families connect with volunteers as well as professionals that help moms and dads get credit cleaned up and learn new ways of managing assets and budgets to make smarter choices and help stabilize income and spending.
It’s fun to watch the empowerment happen before our very eyes, when we see families begin to see the light at the end of a long tunnel and start to see how improved decision-making translates into a better life!
Through a wholeness ministry grant from First Christian Church of Louisville, the FEP was able to provide direct assistance disbursements for families participating in the
program. A few examples of how the grant was used includes emergency housing assistance, tuition assistance, and childcare payment assistance.

The wholeness grant used to fund this ministry was made possible through your faithful financial support of our church and its ministries and help fund a variety of efforts to make our world a better place.
