First Christian Church Helps Local Man Reach Goals

David Price is a happy-go-lucky guy who loves people and brings sunshine wherever he goes. Until a year and a half ago, David spent much of his time in a sheltered workshop or day program with other people with disabilities.

Through participation in a project aimed at helping people become integrated citizens of their community , Volunteers of America completed a process called “discovery” with David, looking through the lens of assets and interests and conditions, and trying to find out roles for him to improve his quality of life.

Through this process, they found out new things about David and saw a renewed energy from him, along with an interest in becoming a volunteer, an employee, and a contributing adult member of his community.

As David’s family, staff, and other support people began to plan how to make that happen, there was one barrier that presented himself over and over – David has problems transferring himself, therefore making it hard to toilet and care for himself without assistance. If David was going to be able to achieve his goals this issue would have to be addressed.

Through a First Christian Church Wholeness Grant, Volunteers of America was able to purchase equipment for his home that will allow him to be more autonomous and decreasing his reliance on paid supports.

Today, David is a part-time employee of mark’s Feed Store in New Albany, Indiana. He is a volunteer with both Kentucky Center for the Arts and University of Louisville Athletics. He has a greeting role at two local churches, and participates weekly in his church bible study, as well as the YMCA’s Silver Sneakers. David’s life is getting better and better and he is more and more a valued member of his community every day, thanks to the generosity of people like you.

The wholeness grant used to fund this ministry was made possible through your faithful financial support of our church and its ministries and help fund a variety of efforts to make our world a better place.
