FCC Louisville Provides New Flooring for Louisville Youth Group

Louisville Youth Group was established in 1990 by local community members who recognized the need to provide safe, and affirming space for Kentuckiana’s LGBTQIA+ youth. Since then, LYG has served thousands of young people from Kentuckiana and the surrounding area. Today, nearly 300 LGBTQIA+ and Allied young adults attend their weekly programming every year.

LGBTQIA+ youth are particularly vulnerable, with a national suicide rate of one youth (under 18) killing themselves every 17 minutes. Louisville is fortunate to offer safe and secure programming for the LGBTQIA+ youth of our great city through the efforts of the Louisville Youth Group.

Louisville Youth Group states the following as their mission:

  • SAFETY Provide a safe space for LGBTQIA+ youth in Kentuckiana and the surrounding areas to socialize and connect with their LGBTQIA+ peers.

  • GROWTH Offer young adults the opportunity to grow their individual and communal identities through programming designed to increase their leadership skills, and emotional intelligence.

  • ACTIVISM Reenvision what activism and growth look like on a personal level, among families, and in our broader communities.

Louisville Youth Group is housed on the upper floors of the First Lutheran Church, a space which has been generously provided free of charge for many years and which is also utilized by AA, NA, a food pantry and other community organizations. Due to age and high traffic, the carpets in the space had begun to disintegrate and had become a health concern.

LYG gets new flooring to update and add some brightness to their welcoming space.

In 2018, with assistance from a First Christian Church of Louisville Wholeness Ministry Grant, LYG completely replaced all carpeting in the youth space with a beautiful laminate flooring, which can be easily cleaned and kept cozy with the addition of rugs (which can be cleaned and/or replaced, as needed). The new space demonstrates to the members of the Louisville Youth Group that they matter and are deserving of a safe, comfortable and welcoming space. Please check out the slideshow above to see the before and after photos!

The wholeness grant used to fund this ministry was made possible through your faithful financial support of our church and its ministries and help fund a variety of efforts to make our world a better place.
