FCC Provides Care for Children so Parents Can Study

For nearly twenty years, First Christian Church has partnered with Eastern Area Community Ministries (EACM) to serve our neighbors who are in crisis. EACM is equips and supports local families so they can achieve life-long stability and dignity. To help immigrant families adjust to a new life in the U.S., EACM provides free English lessons to people from all over the world. First Christian Church was happy to provide a Wholeness Ministry Grant to cover the cost of staffing childcare during these classes, providing a safe place for children to play while their parents study English. Because of this service, parents can gain the skills to succeed at school and work, allowing their families to thrive!

Eastern Area Community Ministries provides free English Classes to anyone in the area interested in improving their English Language skills. These classes take place on Monday mornings, as well as Wednesday mornings and evenings at various locations. Currently EACM serves almost 50 students from over a dozen countries. Free child care is available to students. Classes are available at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.

In early 2019, the students requested a Conversational English class to focus primarily on vocabulary and grammar. The students were interested in adding an opportunity to practice the skills learned in class by just having everyday conversations with English speakers. A Tuesday class was added to accommodate this desire to learn, and more childcare was added as well!

EACM’s partner families rely on the English program to assist in their assimilation into life in the United States as well as prepare for employment. It is a critical piece of fulfilling EACM's vision of a community where every person is fed, sheltered, and safe.

The wholeness grant used to fund this ministry was made possible through your faithful financial support of our church and its ministries and help fund a variety of efforts to make our world a better place.
