FCC Equips Lacrosse Team

Lacrosse is the fastest-growing team sport in America and it has found its way to Louisville. While there have been several high school programs for many years now, lacrosse is still growing in the middle school ranks here in Louisville, with most of the established programs based in the private schools.
Westport Middle School started its boy’s lacrosse program five years ago. Last year, when Dennis Ting took over as the head coach, six boys showed up for the first practice. Only five returned for the second practice. Though the team ended up with 12 students that year, the majority of the students at Westport Middle didn't know there was a lacrosse team at the school or even what lacrosse was.
During this past school year, the Westport Middle Lacrosse Team was able to build off the excitement created in 2018 with more than 20 boys showing up for the introductory practice. Unfortunately, the team was struggling to get the necessary equipment for all the hopeful players and the coaching staff was faced with the tough task of figuring out how to allow all the kids to play. They discussed cutting players but ultimately decided they had to find a way to get the equipment. In some schools, parents may have been able to purchase the equipment but at Westport Middle, many of the families weren’t able to afford the necessary equipment.
Thanks to a Wholeness Grant from First Christian Church, Westport Middle was able to make sure every single boy who wanted to learn the game of lacrosse and play on the team had the opportunity to do so. With grant funds, the team was able to buy helmets, gloves, pads, sticks, balls and other necessary gear to make the game accessible to everyone. While there was a lot of success on the field - winning the program's first game ever, scoring the most goals in a season and hopefully sending several players to local high school programs - the greatest impact was seen in the player’s lives off the field. The coaches saw so many wonderful changes in their students - both in their development as players and in their growth as teammates, students, and citizens.
The wholeness grant used to fund this ministry was made possible through your faithful financial support of our church and its ministries and help fund a variety of efforts to make our world a better place.
