The stores are filled with piles of sweaters and socks and pajamas, plus knick-knacks and techie do-dads for those who already have all the sweaters, socks and pajamas they need. The jolly music of Christmas seems to be everywhere and parking spaces are few and far between. We may not be feeling part of the merriment and joy of the season if our hearts are heavy. We may feel disconnected if our minds are too filled with “have to’s” and “should’s” — with a feeling of not enough time to get everything done before the holiday arrives.

Or we might have a feeling of peace and calm. We may recognize a portion of a song that can settle us, quiet us for a moment. We can recall Christmases past sitting in a church pew with the lights dimmed and a small white candle held in our hand as we pass the flame from our candle to our neighbor’s. We all begin to quietly sing the words “Silent night, holy night; all is calm, all is bright.”

Just thinking of these moments can settle us in the midst of a busy and crowded store or searching for the elusive parking space. We are reminded of the peace and joy and love that our loving and gracious God offers to us all.

Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight! Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia! Christ the Savior is born! Christ the Savior is born!
