The mission of Family Scholar House (FSH) is to end the cycle of poverty and transform the Louisville community by empowering families and youth to succeed in education and achieve lifelong self-sufficiency. FSH provides a comprehensive continuum of services including academic and family support services, as well as affordable housing to low-income single-parents who wish to achieve a college degree. FSH works to assist participants in achieving self-sufficiency and breaking the cycles of poverty, homelessness and dependency upon government subsidies. All participants attend two or four-year programs at the accredited college or university of their choice and may now also take part in a new apprenticeship in healthcare.
To achieve these goals, FSH provides on-site childcare, career exploration, academic coaching, counseling, financial management classes, life skills development, access to technology, transportation and emergency assistance for basic needs. In 2017, FSH served 3,571 student parents with 4,913 children counting on them and 349 foster care alumni. Programming supports FSH participants' formal and informal educational pursuits and empowers them to develop career goals, enter the workforce, establish financial independence and build assets. In May 2017, FSH celebrated the graduation of 64 of our participants (371 total) and saw them exit our residential program ready for careers, homeownership and financial independence.
In 2018, First Christian Church of Louisville provided a Wholeness Ministry Grant to provide internet connectivity in the computer labs on all five of the FSH campuses so that scholars of all ages (K-12 and college) could complete homework assignments and online coursework. FSH computer labs are often the only access FSH Young Scholars have outside of school to complete their homework. For FSH adult students, the computer labs make it possible for them to study and complete assignments just steps away from home and with peace of mind, as their children receive care in the adjacent playrooms.
The wholeness grant used to fund this ministry was made possible through your faithful financial support of our church and its ministries and help fund a variety of efforts to make our world a better place.
