Our History

The Christian Church began from two separate simultaneous movements in the early 1800’s - one in Western Pennsylvania under the leadership of Thomas and Alexander Campbell (Disciples of Christ), and the other in Kentucky under the  leadership of Barton W. Stone (Christian Church).  In 1832, in Lexington, the two merged to form the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The new movement, referred to as the Restoration Movement, was founded on the hope of restoring Christian Unity and restoring simple New Testament practices.

Two well known Disciple slogans express the heart of this movement:

“In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; and in all things, charity”

“No Creed but Christ.”

In the mid 1830’s a group of individuals formed the community of faith that would eventually become the First Christian Church of Louisville.  The church has had several locations, including a structure that is still standing in downtown Louisville at 4th and Breckinridge Street.

First Christian relocated to our current facility in 1979. Since then, the church has continued many of the traditions that span the long history of our congregation as well as started many new traditions.

Today we remain committed to the principles that guided our founders and to the growing vision God has given us for the future.  We believe that God is calling us to be a shining light in our community and we hope that you can be a part of writing our future story at First Christian Church.
